في عهد أوردونيو الأول من أستوريا (850–866)، بدأت المملكة تُعرف بإسم ليون. وفي 910، تأسست مملكة ليون المستقلة حين قسّم ملك أستوريا أرضه بين أبنائه الثلاث.
