يستعمل مصطلح أسرع من الصوت كتعريف للسرعة التي تتخطى سرعة الصوت (1 ماخ). في درجة الحرارة العادية 21 °س(70 °ه)، يلزم لجسم ما حتى يتحرك بسرعة أسرع من الصوت سرعة قدرها 344 م/ث تقريبا ، (1.129 ق/ث) ، 761 ميل/س أو 1.238 ك/س. السرعة التي تزيد خمسة أضعاف عن سرعة الصوت تسمى فائق السرعة. Speeds where only some parts of the air around an object (such as the ends of rotor blades) reach supersonic speeds are labeled transonic (typically somewhere between Mach 0.8 and Mach 1.2).
